Valerie Williams is a choreographer, director, producer and dancer, currently collaborating and creating a variety of dance productions that are performed on various stages, in an art gallery, and in virtual reality. A co-founder of Co'Motion Dance Theater in 1978, Ms. Williams has also worked as a dance artist in education in 9 states, as a rehearsal director for Bill T. Jones, a performer and researcher with Musica Antiqua, a musical theater performer, choreographer to several theater companies, and a guest artist in 6 different countries. Her choreographic work includes modern dance works, musical theater, mixed media performance and virtual reality. It has been presented in theaters across the upper Midwest of the USA, New York City, Italy, France, and in a regular season since 1993 at the City Auditorium in Ames, Iowa. As a social dance expert, her knowledge has been sought on subjects from Spanish medieval dances to contemporary Swing. The focus of her artistic work at present lies in the dialogue between human movement, dance and new technologies. She has a particular interest in interactive work, some of which involves a live performance element, some of which focuses on audience-directed interactivity, and a combination of the two.

And even less formal:
Valerie Williams has been dancing professionally since 1973, and making dances since the ballet she and Sue Ganz danced for the 6th grade luncheon. Valerie co-founded Co'Motion Dance Theater in 1978 after working with the Old Creamery Theater Company. She is still making dances for CMDT, choreographs musical theater productions, reconstructs and performs Renaissance dances with Musica Antiqua, wrote a series of lesson plans to accompany the State of Iowa's dance curriculum and an e-book on Renaissance dance, and teaches Argentine Tango. Valerie's current modern dance work includes interactive technologies because she believes dancers should have more control over their environment. She still likes to dance.

A much sought after residency artist since 1978, Valerie Williams teaches classes in dance technique, creative movement, movement in curriculum, composition, improvisation, social dance, folk dance, Renaissance dance, and kinesiology. Her teaching emphases lie in building articulate bodies through the discipline of modern dance technique, and opening students’ minds to the creative possibilities in dance. Through exercises designed to build strength, flexibility, control and creative problem-solving, students learn to dance and choreograph as they increase their movement vocabulary. Continued exploring beyond the first answer is stressed in creative problem solving.
Valerie also choreographs and stages dance sequences for plays. She can make your musical production come to life with fresh choreography, (and make your audience wonder if those are really their children on stage). Her performances keep audiences spellbound. Joy in dance is evident in all she does.
Author of A Guide to Dance Curriculum in Schools, Valerie can assist you in creating your own program in movement and dance, including curriculum inspired lessons. She’ll share field tested lesson plans and train teachers to use that curriculum.
